Ji has been skating since he was 7. He competes on behalf of the Skating Club of San Francisco.

Palo Alto High School junior Wilbur Ji finished in 12th place in the novice men’s division at the 2012 United States Figure Skating National Championships in San Jose.

Ji skated an almost perfect long program, but was unable to move up in the rankings after his shaky short program last Sunday.

Skating in front of a hometown crowd, Ji recieved a standing ovation from the some 250 fans at the arena.

Ji qualified for the US Championships after placing 4th at the Pacific Coast Sectional Championships. Although he has been competing for almost ten years now, this was Ji's first trip to Nationals.

“My [goal for Nationals] is to just have fun,” Ji said in an interview in December. “I mean, how many people can actually say they skated at Nationals?”

The competition, held at HP Pavilion, runs through January 29. Full results of Ji’s event, as well as the rest of the competition, are updated live at icenetwork.com
